Hose marking: stamping, laser or dot peen — what to choose for the shop

Marking turns an anonymous assembly into a product with a history: date, pressure, batch. We compare three application technologies — impact stamping as on Link Technology machines, laser engraving and dot-peen marking — with their strong and weak points.

While there is one hose lying on the bench, marking seems an unnecessary operation. It becomes essential when there are hundreds of assemblies: the customer asks which batch the hose on a failed excavator came from, when it was assembled and who tested it. Without marking these questions hang in the air — and so does the claim investigation: Your assembly cannot be told from someone else's. That is why marking is a separate stage in the hose shop process chain, and the test report refers to the number stamped on the ferrule — we wrote about this link in the article on pressure testing.

What is put on the assembly

The established set: manufacturer, assembly date, working pressure, hose size and the batch or order number. Some customers — mining companies, shipyards, defence plants — specify the marking content in the contract, and incoming inspection checks it against the passport and the test report. The marking goes on the fitting ferrule: the only metal surface of the assembly that lives as long as the hose itself.

Impact stamping with interchangeable type — the Link Technology approach

Hardened type with relief characters is set into a holder, the part is clamped, one impact — and a deep indented imprint of the whole line remains on the ferrule. This is exactly how the LT-KZ50 with a manual lever and the LT-KZ50A with a pneumatic drive work.

Strengths. Durability beyond competition: a stamp is a deformation of the metal to a noticeable depth; it reads under dirt and a coat of paint, can be felt with the fingers and does not disappear under the abrasion that wipes out surface marking. The equipment needs no electronics and no consumables; the manual version works without any power at all. The whole line is imprinted in one cycle — with a prepared type set this is the fastest method for standard marking.

Limitations. The content is limited to the type set: digits, letters, signs. A logo or a code cannot be assembled from standard type, and changing the text means rearranging type with tweezers, which slows the work when the content changes often. The part must withstand the impact force — no limitation for hose ferrules, but a thin-walled tube is not marked this way.

Laser engraving

Strengths. Complete freedom of content: text in any font, a logo, a serial number, a QR or DataMatrix code with a link to the product passport. The non-contact process suits thin-walled parts as well, is easily automated and very fast in series, and the content changes at the press of a button — no type involved.

Limitations. Price: a marking laser with a safety enclosure and extraction costs an order of magnitude more than a stamping unit. The engraving affects only a thin surface layer — on a ferrule that works for years in abrasion and corrosion, a laser mark can fade before the hose reaches the end of its life. Add the safety requirements: laser class, an enclosed working zone, removal of evaporation products.

Dot-peen marking

Strengths. A carbide stylus under programme control pins the characters from dots — the content is as free as with a laser: any text, serial numbers with auto-increment and, what is often asked for, the company logo. The dot relief is deeper than laser engraving, the equipment is noticeably cheaper than a laser, and portable heads mark even large parts in place.

Limitations. The pinning goes dot by dot, so in series the process is slower than both stamping and laser. The dot relief is finer than the solid imprint of type — under a layer of dirt such marking reads worse than a stamp. A controller and power are needed, the part requires rigid clamping, and the process is noisy.

For a hose shop the choice is usually decided by durability and price: the ferrule works in dirt and abrasion, where a relief stamp stays readable longest, and the budget of a stamping unit is incomparable with a laser system. A laser is justified where traceability codes are needed on every part; dot peen is the compromise for those who need a logo and variable numbers without a laser budget.

The type holder: one, two or three lines

In the LT-KZ50 and LT-KZ50A the type is set into an interchangeable holder. It comes in three versions — single-line, two-line and three-line:

  • Single-line — the minimum set: date and working pressure.
  • Two-line — the most common: the manufacturer and hose size are added.
  • Three-line — the full traceability block: the third line takes the batch or order number that links the assembly to the test report.

All three holders work with one type set: the delivery includes four sets of digits 0–9, dashes and spare blank type; up to three additional type modules are supplied on request.

Frequently asked questions

Can a company logo be applied by stamping?
Standard type consists of digits, letters and signs — a logo cannot be assembled from them. There are two routes for a logo: a special die with Your mark made for the KZ50 holder — a task we work out on request — or dot-peen marking, where the stylus pins any picture from a programme.
How many holder lines should I choose?
It depends on the marking content. The date and pressure fit in one line; the manufacturer and hose size add a second; the batch or order number a third. If in doubt, take the two-line holder: it is the most common format, and a line can be left empty.
Will the stamp wear off over the hose's service life?
A relief stamp is a deformation of the metal to a noticeable depth, not a layer on the surface. It stays readable under dirt and paint, can be felt with the fingers and disappears only with the metal itself. That is the key difference from laser engraving, which affects only the surface layer.
How does the KZ50 differ from the KZ50A and when to choose which?
The marking mechanics are identical; the drive differs: the KZ50 has a manual clamping lever, the KZ50A an air-driven pump from the shop supply. Up to a few dozen markings a day the manual unit is convenient; in serial production the pneumatic version takes the load off the operator and keeps the pace. Type and holders are interchangeable.
