Hose cutting: why the frame matters as much as the blade

An even end without fraying is the basis for fitting seating. We break down what a clean cut is made of: a rigid vibration-free structure, a power reserve for R15 spiral hoses, the right blade and smoke extraction. With a video of the LT-C400 at work.

Cutting is the first operation in the hose shop process chain, and its mistakes drag through all the following ones. A skewed or frayed end does not let the fitting seat to full depth, bent braid wires obstruct the ferrule, and burnt rubber crumbles into the hose bore. A good cut looks boring: a perpendicular face, even rubber, wires in place. Behind that boredom stand four things, described below.

Structure: rigidity against vibration

A thin cutting blade at working speed means thousands of revolutions per minute. Any bearing play, a weak frame or a light base turns at such speeds into vibration: the blade starts to wobble, the cut goes wavy, the blade edge chips, and the machine "walks" on the bench. That is why in Link Technology cutting machines the main investment is in what is not visible in the specification table — a massive welded frame and a rigid spindle unit. The motor reaches full speed while the body stays still.

Power: a reserve for spiral hoses

A braided 2SN hose and a six-spiral R15 are tasks of a different order: the R15 has six layers of heavy wire, and a weak motor bogs down on it — the blade slows and burns the rubber instead of cutting it. The LT-C400F and LT-C400A are fitted with a motor with a power reserve and cut spiral hoses up to R15 2" without losing speed. An important note: cutting the R15 requires the toothed high-speed steel blade and the model with pneumatic feed — the LT-C400A: its feed speed adjustment lets the hose approach the blade slowly, and it is precisely a low feed speed that the dense six-layer spiral needs so the blade cuts through without overheating. For the service range up to 2" with braids the LT-C300 is sufficient, and large industrial hoses are covered by the LT-C520A with a 520 mm blade.

Smoke: an extraction system with filtration

Friction cutting of rubber inevitably produces smoke and fine crumbs — the dirtiest operation in the shop. All Link Technology cutting machines have a duct connection for extraction, and an effective smoke extraction system with filtration is available as an option: the smoke is taken directly from the cutting zone and cleaned rather than discharged into the shop or outside. For shops without stationary ventilation this is the only way to keep the air within limits; the solution is complemented by the LT-X35 extraction unit.

Blades: smooth and toothed high-speed steel

The cutting tool of the machine is a replaceable blade, and its choice affects the cut as much as the speed:

The key difference of high-speed steel blades is heat resistance. On a spiral hose the cutting zone heats strongly, and ordinary steel tempers at such temperature: the edge softens and wears in an avalanche. High-speed steel keeps its hardness at noticeably higher heat, so on heavy hoses it lasts several times longer. Blades of all types are interchangeable within the machine's mounting size; other sizes on request.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't a hose be cut with an angle grinder?
It can be, but the result shows on the end: the cut wanders off perpendicular, the end is frayed, the braid wires are bent. The fitting ferrule seats on such an end at an angle, and the hose is cut unsecured — which is also unsafe. A cutting machine clamps the hose and guides the blade strictly perpendicular to the axis.
When is the smooth blade enough, and when is the toothed one needed?
The smooth blade from the standard delivery confidently cuts braided hoses — for a service centre it is usually sufficient. The toothed high-speed steel blade is taken for constant work with multi-spiral 4SP/4SH/R13/R15 hoses and for serial cutting: it bites into the spiral more aggressively and keeps its hardness at temperatures where a plain blade softens.
What does the pneumatic feed in the A-index models give?
The blade is fed onto the hose by an air cylinder rather than by the operator's foot, and the feed speed is adjustable. The force and pace are the same from cut to cut, the operator does not lean over the cutting zone, and on heavy six-spiral hoses such as the R15 it is precisely a low, preset feed speed that lets the blade cut through the spiral without overheating.
How do I know the blade needs replacing?
By the cut and by the sound: the machine takes longer to cut, the end burns more than usual, there is a smell of overheated rubber, and burn marks or chipped teeth appear on the blade edge. A worn blade heats itself and the hose — do not put off the replacement.
